👀 SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: Helen, Jacinda, Hillary, Kamala vs. Key, Luxon, Obama, Biden, TrumpOften female leaders are referred to by their first name:✔ PROS - It creates familiarity with them, as if we know them; it's a genuine campaign tactic that may make them more likeable❌ CONS - It is less respectful, and diminishes authority, seriousness and professionalism; it may reinforce sexist beliefs associating femininity with weakness; it may unintentionally reinforce stereotypes that women are more approachable or less serious than their male counterpartsOften male leaders are referred to by their surname:✔ PROS - It is more respectful, and aligns with the traditional way of addressing male politicians, bolstering their authority, seriousness and professionalism❌ CONS - It creates a formal, more remote connection to them🤔 There may be no 'better' or 'worse', but always good to be reminded that words matter. Thanks Anastacia (Stacy) Rodriguez for chats about this! 🙌

it is noticeable in sports too. Most of the time the male athletes will be referred to by their surname whereas the women it's normally their first name.

I noticed this - but I also know that Kamala Harris has said on record she'd prefer to be known as her first name. I also think it's a throw back to boarding school mentality for men...

I have noticed this aswell, the same in the corporate world. I have also found it quite common for men to have nicknames which reinforces allyship and comradery. Very rare to come across a woman with a nickname in this setting.

Really good food for thought. I wonder if it's more strategic to market on a first-name basis with younger voters. I'm an elder millennial and grew up calling friends' parents Mr/Mrs but prefer the informality of going by first name as it feels less hierarchical/makes me feel like I'm on the same level as another person. I imagine voters younger than I prefer informality as much as if not more!

Doesn't matter surname, first name, female or male. Leadership skill plus knowledge to handling current geopolitical is most priorities

I wonder if this has to do with the history of women taking other husband's name after marriage? Not everyone does this now l, of course, but women's first names would stay with them no matter what. Historically in the US, the last name could change

Also worth considering that we have had and do have so many male world (and work) leaders that likely come from the same ethnic group, so it’s probably in part also used to tell apart the myriad Richard’s, David’s, John’s, and Chris’s 😉

what I find very annoying is the way female leaders often have their outfits critiqued ....never heard that done for a male leader

Why does the use of surnames for males & first names for women occur is the question? Why does the media continue the headlines in this fashion?

🗳 There's a tonne of chat around Trump vs TBC and how America's decision could affect the global economy. I wanted a summary, so I wrote it! https://lnkd.in/gJzTx_5YThis is what my curious mind creates in a day! 😜

If you answer anything other than valued, rewarded, recognised and fulfilled, perhaps you're doing business wrong. Your people and team culture are your most valuable assets for hitting those big business goals. And that's money in the bank! 🥅

💡 I had an epic truth bomb convo with a passionate customer success person last week. He gave huge props to his former employer AA Insurance for building a strong, Aotearoa-based team. Two things stood out from our chat:🥝 As a Kiwi going through the same weather events as his customers, his empathy wasn't scripted, instead it was local, authentic and heartfelt 🥝 That teams are made of their people, and great teams are made of great people! If you're looking for an epic CX team lead in Aussie, hit me up for his contact details! 🙌✨

🙌 Many morsels in this one year rearview mirror moment from Wilhelmina Shrimpton. This one resonated with me most of all: 'There are so many opportunities out there, and ones you don’t even know about yet.' ✨It also reminds me of something Mia Hazelwood said to me last week, which was 'My job didn't even exist 5 years ago'. 👌 Word. Every economic downturn sparks new opportunity. Maybe it's time we dig into our potential and unlock growth outside our comfort zone?! 💥Congrats Wilhelmina Shrimpton (...and taxes are still scary!) 😱

PSA to recruiters. 📣 When I've been excited about a brand, company or role, I've researched the heck out of it before I speak to any of the team. My friend Rochelle Moffitt and I were talking yesterday about how some Kiwi recruiters today are posting jobs not naming the company. 🤔 How does that empower the applicant? How can they know it's a dream role or that they're the best fit for the business (e.g. that their values align)? And - crucially - how much time is wasted to-ing and fro-ing when it's a 'No' from the applicant in the first place?💡 Related, this post is #inspo! 👇

I'm doing a winter reset and something happened that reminded why. 👉 Last night I was chatting to someone I haven't spoke to in a while - very tragically he reached out to tell me of someone who died by suicide. In our convo he dropped a medley of truth bombs. This is the one I needed most! 👇 💡 💥 When I see ya next, I'll be BELINDA f*ckING NASH ~ feel free to be your brave, bold self too! 💥
